The Rain Knows
These rains outside bring with them a familiar torment,
one I cannot shake,
rains that open scars forgotten, I thought had healed with time,
signs of a retired soldier in his post-traumatic age,
a lifeline drowned in a struggle to a battle I'd already lost,
long before the facts were made clear,
long before the dust had even settled.
These rains bring with them reminders of what warmth felt like,
with the possibilities we had,
what flowers could have bloomed from the many seeds we had sown,
make the garden our home and forget the world outside.
In each moment our eyes locked,
felt your pulse in your nape,
I swear time stopped every time,
made my heart a fragile glass.
In that moment it was safe,
but in that moment I started to feel the cracks,
crept in like a thief in the night during the kiss,
during the bliss to a place unguarded.
I wish I'd noticed,
or was ready enough to admit the familiar trend.
The cracks were always there.
The bliss blinded me from them.
The warmth made me feel whole,
glued it piece tightly,
it felt like a home, safe.
With each kiss, it grew fragile still.
With each promise, its weight grew unstable
like an explosion long overdue.
But it didn't in the end;
it crept in through only a few words.
Amid silence after that,
I felt the rain start to fall on my wounds out bare,
took in the cold embrace
and then left it at that.
